About the artist

Planisphaerium represents a map that shows us our geographic environment in a painting. It’s creation simultaneously involved science, technology, and art. Upon acknowledging the roundness of our planet, we see it size and limitations. This view of the planisphere shows a vulnerable and luminous icon which, like the earth itself, is in danger unless it is painstakingly taken care of. The ancient maps and planispheres from Ptolemy to Mercator have played a role in the scientific and artistic processes involved in the discovery of new lands. I have interpreted these maps to recreate a new artistic dimension that is not graphic but pictorial. Presently a map is a digital technological image that does little to transmit our humanity. I believe that the same image painted in this simple or even primitivistic way is much more effective in transmitting our fragile humanity. See more in my web page: www.juanluisquintana.com
