Jean Rooney is an Irish born artist, living and working in New Brunswick, Atlantic Canada. She was educated at The National College of Art and Design, Ireland receiving a BFA in Printmaking and MSC in Multimedia from Trinity College, Dublin University. She won an Irish Arts Council Bursary and ArtsNB production grant. She is currently a member of faculty at The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, Canada.
The primary focus of Jean Rooney’s work is the creation of Imagery through a praxis of play and a love of narrative. Known for her vibrant use of colour, graphic marks, and layering. Rooney creates paintings, prints, and installations which use the visual language of contemporary iconography, popular culture and nostalgia. Rooney is interested in assuming the power of this anonymous aesthetic in order to share personal expressions.
The second element of her work engages communities and public spaces. She has led nine community and collaborative art projects since 2010. Her Public commissions include the Delta Hotels by Marriott, Fredericton and Opportunities New Brunswick, Canada. Her work is in the permanent public collection of the Province of New Brunswick.
